SOLDIERS DIE IN WARS
***
Teenaged girls sometimes
Wrote soldiers, but their letters
Came back marked “Deceased”
***
NOTE: During World War II, many teenaged girls competed to see who could have the most pen pals in the United States military forces, but as the war dragged on, occasionally a letter addressed to a soldier would come back to the teenaged girl who had written it. The letter would include the reason why it had not been delivered — the front would be stamped “Deceased.”
